Varaha Mandapam Mahabalipuram

This splendid architecture is lying beside the Arjuna penance. The entrance is adorned with two pillars engraved with two horned lion bases, and a cell guarded by two gate keepers. There are four eye-catching bas-reliefs. The northern one depicts Lord Vishnu (Varaha) Varaha (the mighty boar) standing at one feet on top of Naga, the snake king.

The southern wall displays Lord Vishnu in the form a Vamana (a small figured Brahmin). Vamana approaches Bali, a tyrant and requests him to grant a land so that he can cover with three steps. Empower Bali grants him the wish and Vamana covers the earth with one step, the Heavens with the second and places the third step on Bali’s head with Bali’s permission. Vamana then pushed Bali to the underworld. Lord Vishnu is depicted with his cosmic form with eight hands and eight legs. The eastern wall portrays Goddess Lakshmi with two maidens and two elephants pouring water on the head..

The next side has the carving of Goddess Durga standing on a lotus, under the shade of a royal umbrella with her four hands. This resembles the Draupadi Ratha.
