The artistic town of Mahabalipuram holds a very prominent place in the heart of art lovers. Lying along the shores of Bay of Bengal , Mahabalipuram is houses the famous Ratha temples known for its splendid architecture. Built in 7th century by the Pallava King Narsimha, till date the Ratha temples display the artistic genius of the ancient period as well as the keen artistic sense of the great Pallava rulers. With Ratha temples, a new pattern of architecture was born, known as the South Indian temple architecture. The marvellous Rath temples are carved out of one single rock have beautiful mandapams. The Ratha cave Temples are also known as the 'Paanch Pandava Ratha' . They are called Rathas as they are in the shape of chariots. There are eight rathas and five rathas derived its name from the five Pandavas of Mahabharata. The five Pandava rathas are The five Pandava rathas are the Dharma raja Ratha, the Bhima Ratha, the Arjuna Ratha, the Draupadi Ratha and the Nakul Sahadev Ratha. These rathas are in shape of chaityas and Buddhist Viharas.
