Temple Of Sthalasayana Perumal
The Temple of Sthalasayana Perumal is of the most marvellous architectural temple of all times. The temple was constructed by the famous Pallava King named Mahendravarman (600-630 A.D.). He actually laid the foundations of massive rock cut cave-temples. "Sthalasayana Perumal" is the residing Deity. The Diety is Lord Vishnu who chose to recline on the spot.
It is believed that sage Pundareeka was a worshipper of Lord Vishnu and used to offer Lotus flower at His feet. He always wished to see the Lord. His devotion pleased the Lord who visited the sage in disguise as old man and begged for food. When the sage returned with food, he was surprised to see the Lord’s image of Ananthasayanam there.
The temple is located near the bus terminus and it is one of the famous shore temples in Mahabalipuram. The main shrine is for Lord Vishnu in the form of Ananthasayanam and Godess Lakshmi called as Nilamangai.
